Background
Many developing
nations have difficulties providing a sufficient amount of clean water for its
inhabitants. The mission of this group is to develop a distillation device that
utilizes the collection of evaporation to produce fresh water. The group plans to improve past solar stills by
increasing the rate of evaporation. Evaporation can be promoted by increasing
the energy retained by the device from the sun, concentrating the rays of the
sun, and lowering the boiling point of the water. A prototype of the device
will be produced and will be used to conduct testing on the efficiency of the
groups design. At the conclusion of this course, the group
will have produced a prototype, a blog chronicling the progress of the project,
a lab notebook showing the design process, and a final report detailing the
completed project. Figure 1 displays the idea behind the Team Clean Water Solar Still.
